Government Grants for Felons

Kenny got his $12,000 grant in 4 days.

Government grants for felons have rarely been so widely available, and much needed, as they are today. In the wake of serious market instability, the economic decline that followed, the federal government has allocated billions of dollars for grants. Outside of the current economic decline, grants are meant to spur commercial innovation, produce research on a variety of issues that helps up lead better lives, support the growth of small business, bolster the work of non-profits, encourage the arts and so on. And this remains true today, but the emphasis on the grants today are the way they can help spur economic regeneration in the country.

Government grants typically amount to provisions of cash to grantees that do not have to be repaid. There are government loan programs as well, but grants are not intended to be repaid by the grantee. And they come from a number of sources. About 60 different federal agencies participate in these programs. There are also thousands of state grants available as well.

Many forms of government grants

Different grants vary in terms of their intended use, the granting agency, and what the funds are expected to produces in terms of results for the economy. Some grants are designed to produce widespread effects on the economy, while others have more narrow focus.

Grants can range from several hundred dollars, so several hundred thousands of dollars. There are a few hard and fast rules. Grantees must be at least 18 and must be American citizens or legal residents.

Eligibility generally falls into the following categories: Government organizations, Education organizations, public housing organizations, non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, small businesses, and individuals. Of note are those for small businesses and individuals. What defines a small business can vary from one grant source to another, so be sure to check out those differences. Individuals are able to apply only for those grants that are written for individuals

There are numerous government grant categories, including: Agriculture, Arts, Business and Commerce, Community Development, Disaster Prevention and Relief, Education, Employment/Labor/Training, Energy, Environmental Quality, Food/Nutrition, Health, Housing, Humanities, Information/Statistics, Law/Justice/Legal Services, Natural Resources, Recovery Act, Regional Development, Science and Technology, Social Service and Income Security, and Transportation.

Government grants are gaining new attention

These grants have gained a lot of attention in the past year. One source of government grants reports that application for these grants has increased by 50% over levels from a year ago. That said, there are also more government grants being made available, so the increase in applications should not be taken as a sign that all the grant funds are being used up. Much of the increase in grant activity is attributed to the Recovery Act, which was signed into law this year and which has put hundreds of billions of dollars into the grant barrel.

Each grant has its own particular aims and requirements, so be sure to read through the grant thoroughly before applying. While there is not a limit on the number of grants you can apply to, some of the grant application processes can be time consuming and you will want to focus your efforts accordingly.
